Vasectomy Reversal

Vasectomy reversal is a complex microsurgical male fertility procedure that reconnects the reproductive tract to restore the passage of sperm into the ejaculate. This can be performed after prior vasectomy or for reproductive tract obstruction caused by other etiologies such as infection or prior surgery.

Success rates vary based on the time since vasectomy and other factors, with sperm returning to the ejaculate in approximately 60–95% of appropriately selected patients. Pregnancy rates are influenced by both partners' fertility.

Depending on the findings during surgery, reconstruction may involve a vasovasostomy (direct simple reconnection) or vasoepididymostomy (complex connection of the vas deferens to the epididymis).

Evaluation includes consideration of the time since vasectomy, prior fertility, female partner factors, and reproductive goals.

Microsurgical vasectomy reversal can provide an opportunity for natural conception and may be an alternative to surgical sperm retrieval with IVF/ICSI in appropriately selected couples.

Vasectomy reversal is typically not covered by insurance.
