Penile Prosthesis Revision

Penile prosthesis revision involves repairing or replacing a previously implanted penile prosthesis because of mechanical failure, infection, erosion, malposition, pain, or other complications.

Depending on the problem, revision may involve replacement of one component, replacement of the entire device, correction of positioning, or removal and replacement of an infected prosthesis. In selected cases of prosthesis infection, specialized salvage surgery can allow, in select cases, removal of the infected implant and immediate placement of a new prosthesis (often a malleable, and later change to an inflatable).

Revision surgery is more complex than a first-time implant because scar tissue and changes in penile anatomy may be present. Outcomes are generally very good in experienced hands, although risks of infection, bleeding, erosion, recurrent mechanical problems, and penile shortening are somewhat higher than with primary implantation.

Recovery depends on the complexity of the revision but commonly requires several weeks before full sexual activity.
