Spermatocelectomy / Epididymectomy

Spermatocelectomy is the surgical removal of a symptomatic spermatocele, a benign cyst arising from the epididymis. Epididymectomy involves removal of all or part of the epididymis and may be considered for selected patients with spermatocele no longer desiring fertility, chronic epididymal pain or other significant pathology.

These procedures are generally outpatient. Recovery usually involves several days of discomfort and swelling, with strenuous activity avoided for several weeks.

Potential risks include bleeding, infection, persistent pain, recurrence, injury to the testicle, and scarring of the reproductive tract. Because the epididymis is involved in sperm transport, these procedures can potentially affect fertility on the treated side and should be discussed carefully in men who may desire future fertility.
