Low Testosterone (Hypogonadism)

Low testosterone (hypogonadism) occurs when testosterone levels are consistently low in a man with compatible symptoms such as reduced libido, decreased energy, erectile difficulties, chronic fatigue, or changes in body composition.

Evaluation generally includes two early-morning testosterone measurements along with additional hormonal testing when indicated to determine the underlying cause.

Treatment may include addressing reversible causes such as obesity, inadequate exercise, poor sleep, or obstructive sleep apnea; fertility-preserving hormonal therapy in appropriate patients; or testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) when appropriate.

For men who are actively trying to conceive, testosterone replacement therapy can suppress sperm production and is generally avoided.
